Location: Ross Barnett Resvoir, Jackson, Mississippi
Host: Jackson Yacht Club
Boat: Flying Scot
# of Races: 3

Race #1
Course: W2
Wind: Medium becoming light and shifty
# of boats: 10
Placed: 9/10
Notes: RC screwed up starting sequence - dropped the I flag with two minutes remaining, signaled start with one minute remaining. Started though with a good mid-line start, only two boats ahead (probably because many of the competitors were confused by wrong signals). Recalled, second try not so good - middle of the pack. Windward legs were okay, but Jeff Brown said he thought I was hooking the leech on the main - too much vang. Downwind abysmal, couldn't catch a boat. Dave Vaughn did not trim spinnaker very well, cleated it off to light cigarettes and open beers, didn't play the sheet except when chute collapsed. Tacks better; only dropped tiller once. Last downwind leg wind shifted forward onto beam and past; made decision to drop shoot and beam-reach to line. This prevented last place boat from passing us.
Position: 9/10

Race #2
Course: W2
Wind: Light and shifty
# of boats: 10
Placed: 9/10
Notes: Dave Vaughn skippered. Downwind killed us again, couldn't hold our position. Not sure why, busy trimming chute. Upwind peformance okay, think tactics hurt us more than boat speed. Couldn't use compass to play the shifts because skipper inexperienced with compass.
Position: 10/10

Race #3
Course: W2 1/2
Wind: Medium and puffy
# of boats: 8
Placed: 3/8
Notes: Jeff Brown skippered, I crewed. Lousy start; mainsheet fouled around end of boom. Last boat over the line, windward to all. Jeff tacked out immediately and headed right. Stayed right with Jackson and Bay-Waveland boats while rest of fleet stayed left. Puffs were shifting right 5 - 10 degrees, making starboard the lifted tack. Fourth or fifth boat to round windward mark; downwind performance very good (experienced skipper and crew). Passed at least one boat downwind. Second beat stayed right again, but not as long, rejoined fleet middle of the course on starboard. Had to tack out several times after meeting port-tackers in middle of course who lee-bowed us. Third or fourth boat around the mark, most of the fleet bunched together. Jeff passed several boats downwind to make us second around the leeward mark for last beat. Again, stayed on right-side of course while most of fleet played the left. Pontchartrain and Buccanner crossed in front on port tack 150 yards from the line, continued and then tacked to starboard for finish. We held starboard tack, headed for pin end of line. RC boat was favored end, but had Pass Christian on coming up from behind on windward. Needed a big lift and got it (20 degrees) that kept us inside the ball, finished one-boat length behind 2nd place boat. Pass Christian unable to make up any ground on us. Sure if we tacked Pass Christian would have gotten ahead.
